A Must-Visit Gem in Thamel
If you're looking for a quality coffee spot in Kathmandu's bustling Thamel district, Himalayan Java Coffee on Tridevi Marg is an absolute winner. This place has quickly become one of my favorite hangouts, and I can't recommend it enough.
Atmosphere: The interior design is thoughtfully done, blending modern comfort with local charm. The stunning Moroccan-style tiled floors immediately catch your eye, while the wooden shelving and greenery create a warm, inviting vibe. What I love most is the variety of seating areas - you can sit at the bar counter watching the baristas work their magic, grab a wooden table for casual meetings, or sink into the vibrant red room with its cozy sofas and plants. It's perfect whether you want to work, read, or just relax.
True to their tagline "Your work Place & Neighbourhood Coffee Shop," the free wifi is reliable, and the atmosphere strikes the perfect balance - lively enough to feel energetic but quiet enough to concentrate.
Coffee & Menu: The coffee here is exceptional. They use a professional Victoria Arduino espresso machine, and you can tell the baristas take pride in their craft. The latte I ordered had a beautifully smooth texture, perfectly balanced flavor, and no bitterness whatsoever. I really appreciated the detailed information cards they provide about their beans - like the Sarangkot origin coffee with Anaerobic processing and Bourbon varietal grown at 1000-1300m altitude. It shows they genuinely care about quality.
The bakery selection from "the handcrafted bakery" is impressive. I tried the cheesecake, which was incredibly creamy and not overly sweet - it paired wonderfully with the coffee. They also serve a complimentary brownie bite, which was a lovely touch. The display case has everything from Black Forest cake to Medovik Russian Honey Cake, making it hard to choose just one.
Products: Beyond beverages, they sell beautifully packaged coffee beans, branded mugs, tumblers, and merchandise - perfect for gifts or taking a piece of the experience home.
Service: The staff are friendly and professional, dressed smartly (loved seeing the traditional Dhaka Topi hat!), and genuinely welcoming. They create a comfortable environment without being intrusive.
Worth Noting: No outside food or beverages allowed, and pets aren't permitted inside.
Final Verdict: Himalayan Java Coffee exceeded my expectations in every way. Whether you're a coffee enthusiast, digital nomad, or tourist needing a quality break from exploring, this place delivers. Yes, it's pricier than local street cafes, but the quality, ambiance, and overall experience make it absolutely worth it. This is the kind of place I'd return to again and again. Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
This is the second location I have tried. So far the atmosphere is amazing and service is impeccable. I have only had hot chocolate and tea so I can't attest to the food. It does look good though. The wifi is fast. It is a great place to hang out and relax from the chaos of the Thamel area.
Perfect place for working, chilling, dating or even reading a book. The cafe is peaceful with chill vibes. The food is really good and they have amazing range of cold and hot drinks. The ambience is amazing with plants everywhere. If you are a coffee enthusiast then this is a Nepali coffee paradise. They also have these coffee processing machines that might interest you and level up the vibe. The place has really good hygiene and cleanliness. The staffs are super friendly and humble. Loved my time here. In terms of affordability the prices are on a higher range.
The reviews that said it has a shop atmosphere have it halfway right. There are some spots that are away from the shopping and lend themselves to being a better place to sit and work. Good wifi. Decent coffee. Nice outside area as well.
One of the Best place for coffee in Thamel. You can buy Freshly roasted coffee beans medium to highly roasted as well. They have hundreds of books in selves which you can read if you are on your own. Top notch service, mouth watering foods and they have free wifi to work/stay connected as well. I love the ambience inside specially buddhist influenced wooden boxes and paintings . I do highly recommend this place if you are after coffee around Thamel.
One of the best place for coffee in Kathmandu and Nepal. Great coffee prepared expertly in a variety of ways. Good service and a decent breakfast menu made from organic ingredients. Sandwiches, cakes and pastry also available. Relaxed and casual but comfortable ambiance with good wifi.
One of the first Java in Nepal. Nice remodel, great foods.
I was bummed to find out it was buy 1 get 1 coffee day and no one offered! Also, the wifi was pretty bad so I had to change my location.
This delightful cafe between the Garden of Dreams and the beginning of the Thamel market is a cozy sanctuary from the busy street. The beverages, food, and service are wonderful, with the bonus of clean restrooms and free wifi.
Awesome place to grab a cup of coffee or a sandwich. Great outdoor terrace. Was in town for work and spent many a days here on my laptop. People leave you to your work and it is a very comfortable setting with fast wifi.
It's centrally located, it's big, there's wifi and charging table side. Coffee is mediocre and I'd go to Coffeepasal if I'm craving a proper brew
Yesterday i asked if it was ok to work from here, the waiter said yes and that foreigners do that all the time, there is even dedicated tables with plugs.
So i came today morning, had a coffee and breakfast. Then came again, sit with my laptop to work, ordered a juice.
Couple of hours later the waiter comes and asks “are you gonna order anything, you just had an orange juice right?”
Really wasnt expecting such a rudeness. Service is pretty bad.
Free wifi, with great food and coffee. I will come back here again, whenever I visit Kathmandu.
This was our favourite place to go to for a coffee and to use their amazing wifi. All the coffee is truly delicious and we also enjoyed having breakfast there several times. Staff were all very friendly and happy for you to sit there for an hour or two after ordering to work
Nice coffee, relax environment, good wifi!
We used to love this place, until they told us to stop playing games. We were playing a boardgame in a quiet manner, dusturbing none, order lots of drinks and cakes, and then an old man working there told us to stop (after 2 hours, while not saying anything before) First time we ever had this. Why can loud groups be there, people sitting behind their laptop drinking one coffee every 5 hours, or people watching tiktoks on full volume, but what we did...no!😅
Won't come again...
Nice place for coffee and sweets. Smoothies are yummy! Salad is very nice, but don’t go for the pizza (for pizza cross the street to ice and fire). Very nice place for working or spend some time reading. Decent wifi, good plugs for charging and comfortable tables and couches.
The worst Himalayan Java I've been to, for both service and atmosphere. I would not go back.
Service: I wanted tea. The menu offers pots of tea from an assortment we need to request. They always have this assortment on the counter at HJC. No one was coming to service us, so I walked up to the display and chose a tea. I told a server I wanted that tea, and asked for it with almond milk on the side (which he said they had). He then opened the tea jar and started picking up the teabags with his fingers, fondling them and talking about them. He said I couldn't have that tea, because it wasn't for sale (even though it was in the same display case on the counter as every HJC, and he didn't offer me any other selection). He then left, and came back, and said (opening and fondling the tea again) that I couldn't have this tea with milk, that only one tea comes with milk. We went back and forth a few times, and I realized that he was totally uneducated in any kind of tea besides masala chiya, so I explained that he could bring the tea in hot water with milk on the side. He also brought the tea one more time, with another guy, to clarify everything, with both of them opening and touching the teabags with their bare hands, that they were using to touch everything in the cafe. I told them to stop touching the teabags, as it wasn't clean to do that. They laughed and said okay.
He then brought me a mug of tea (not a pot, one of those cheap NCell mugs). The mug didn't have enough room for milk, and with a small pitcher of heated almond milk, which was scalding (no handle) and spilled all over my hand when I tried to pour it. The tea was not good.
My husband ordered a plain lemon soda. They brought it salted. He accidentally spilled it. When I called the waiters over to help clean it up, they took a rag and pushed all of the water and lemon on the floor, on my shoes and umbrella, and then never came back to clean up the puddle on the floor in front of me. In fact, they never came back to ask us if we wanted to order anything else at all, even though we stayed there working for several hours.
Atmosphere: The space itself is dark and cluttered. A large portion of it is a store selling clearance clothing, and another area is apparently storing unused barista equipment. There are very few tables tall enough for working. The whole room is dark except for a few tables by the windows; we moved there, but then the sun went down, and there was no lighting over those tables. The A/C was blowing straight on us, making it freezing, but outside was too loud from the traffic.
I go to HJC a lot. I'm actually at the Boudha one now ;) I deal with the weirdnesses you find at any HJC, and I normally tip and get to know the staff. But, I would never go back to this place.
Amazing coffee, very delicious. Nice atmosphere too. Relaxed, a mix of travellers, expats and wealthier locals. I mean, I paid Rs. 735 rupees for two amazing hazelnut soy lattes... so you’re paying western prices for specialty milk / flavour / organic Nepali coffee bean. It’s not your typical instant coffee that you get for 100 rupees. Also they are a fair wage employer, growing beans with a local farm and with sustainability in mind. I like this. From small specialty coffee shop to international franchise in more than 30 places around the world, you can understand why they have got so popular. Moreover, Himalayan Java has have some of the best wifi I’ve found in the city. You can always count on Himalayan Java for great coffee, a relaxed environment to hang out, drink coffee and work with those great wifi speeds.
There are so many great coffee shops in Kathmandu, and this is up there in the best few. It's a chain of coffee shops, but the coffee is tasty. This one roasts the beans there, and also has a barrister school out the back. wifi and is stable, food is tasty and there are plenty of seats available.
The best proper coffee in Kathmandu. Large and comfy sofas and tables to work on your laptop are a good complement to the fantastic coffee. Free wifi. Good sandwiches too. A bit pricey and crowded at times, though.
One of my favorite place to hangout and meeting, love to enjoy the different types of of coffee every time I visit there. wifi is also good and a little bit crowded during the evening time but overall nice hospitality, quick service and more importantly yummy pizza and sandwiches.
Excellent coffee in a clean environment
Oh, and free wifi
Great place with good food and drinks. Surprisingly no extortionly overpriced considering the strategic entry point into Thamel. Recommended for meetings and laptop work.
This is a nice place to have a cup coffee. Food are awesome. Sitting arrangment are outstanding. Its awesome place and romantice place. You can work on a laptop. Place is very outstaning. only two problem 1. Staff is loose eye contact with customer and 2 no enterance for wheel chair.
Good coffee. Nice place. Can be noisy on the balcony but very tranquil inside. Only downside is that the wifi was too slow.
Amazing place to work - wifi, outlets, bright, plenty of space, coffee tea smoothies all-day breakfast + other food. What more can you ask for?
For its aroma, ambience, awesome coffee, awesome sandwich and salads, fast wifi (honest confession: slow during max number usage) and the most lively and heart warming staffs - they are the core engine to make you feel so much at your own pace and place!
Best branch of Himalayan java to get engage in your work and hangout with friends.
It also provides you great coffee as well as great working ambiance. You can come here to hangout with your friends, your colleagues for a cup of coffee or quick brunch.
internet is also good in here. It is worth a try. have a good time. Also the location of the palce is perfect as it is near thamel.

Himalayan Java – Tridevi, Thamel is one of my favorite cafés in Kathmandu. The coffee is consistently excellent, and there's a great variety of drinks and snacks to choose from. The atmosphere is warm, comfortable, and perfect for relaxing, meeting friends, or working for a while. The staff are always friendly, attentive, and provide great service. The café is clean, well-maintained, and has a welcoming vibe that makes every visit enjoyable. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for great coffee and a comfortable place to spend time.
