I recommend this place 100%.
Food, fresh juices, cakes, coffee, etc, are delicious. The pumpking soup is one of the best I’ve eaten in Asia.
The team is very proffesional, and the enviroment is a real paradise, full of trees, plants, flowers…💚
It is a good place also for working online.

This vegetarian/vegan cafe offers a peaceful and serene atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating that’s beautifully surrounded by greenery. The garden area adds to the charm, making it an ideal spot to hang out with friends, enjoy some alone time, or even focus on work. Each table is equipped with multi-plug outlets, making it a haven for remote workers and freelancers. I spent half a day here enjoying a three-course meal while working on my laptop, and the experience was delightful.

The food and drinks are decent, and the pricing is reasonable, offering great value for the quality and ambiance. Another bonus is its proximity to the iconic Boudhanath Stupa, which is just a short walk away, making it a perfect place to stop by while exploring the area.

I would definitely recommend this cafe for anyone looking for a tranquil spot to relax, work, or enjoy a wholesome meal while in the Boudha area.

Edit - still absolutely favorite place. ❤️ My Bouddha visit never gets complete without visiting Utpala.

…
This is my favorite place in the city for years. The outdoor sitting with garden, trees and delicious vegetarian food with drinks! This is a perfect place to spend hours working, reading, relaxing. It's very peaceful, slow paced & relaxing.

My only recommendation is I have attended Buffet multiple times but I feel really bad seeing some people Throwing Huge amount of food.

So, Is it possible to but some warm notes with quotes both in nepali and English language encouraging people to not waste food and take smaller portions at first to taste and add more if they can finish?
Let's try to minimize food waste together and encourage people to respect food. 🙏

Thank you again Utpala Cafe for great service, ambiance, food

I recently visited Utpala Cafe, and it was a pleasant experience overall. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, with comfortable seating and soft music in the background—perfect for relaxing or working on a laptop.

The menu offered a good variety of drinks and snacks. I tried the [e.g., cappuccino and a slice of chocolate cake], which were both delicious and well-presented. The coffee was rich and smooth, and the dessert was fresh and flavorful.

The staff were friendly and attentive, making sure everyone was comfortable without being intrusive. The service was fairly quick.

Utpala Cafe is a standout vegetarian haven in Kathmandu—offering a serene atmosphere, mindful cuisine, and gentle service—all at wallet-friendly prices. Whether you’re seeking a relaxed meal, a working cafe, or a contemplative retreat, this place hits the mark.

Except for the hard-working managers (working here at least 4 1/2 years), the confidence level of employees-in-training here is fair to middling. I guess that is to be expected, since those employees are in a training process. Permanent hires are relatively few, at least for the wait staff. So the service here never really improves -- because trainees turn over and and are replaced by new trainees. This is an inherent problem with their business model, given that Utpala is attached to a restaurant-service training organization. Such are the vagaries of Nepal's changing economy and social landscape.

Food here is lackluster but, for the price, it is satisfactory. Hygiene and/or water supply may be an issue, as anecdotally many diners report episodes of "Rana's Revenge" or "The Runs", for short. Mosquitos (and therefore dengue fever risk) have been an issue in the past but as of 2023 there are fewer skeeters . The Restaurant's design is problematic -- it is an open-air cafe, which is wonderful atmpospherically for most times of year, but less than ideal in winter and/or mosquito seasons.

On the plus side, Utpala hosts an enjoyable (but waning, due to high fees and poor attendance) Saturday farmer's market. Products on sale then are fairly top-knotch and one can expect to see many of the local intelligentsia shopping for various prepared food treats. The restaurant's reception area has a pastry selection on display. The offerings are affordable and tasty, including made-to-order birthday cakes; compared to the rather unremarkable meals, these are a delicious bargain. There is an indoor pavilion available for meetings and groups, up to 40 people, such as student clubs and faculty meetings from the Kathmandu University-cum-Rangjung Yeshe Institute one block over. The spacious back lot has many tables in a long open-air gazebo where students or visitors can sit and work; language tutors and the local astrologer-wizard Pandit Radhakrishna can occupy tables and hold meetings free of charge. Just north of the "sanctuary" compound is a large paid parking lot, the only one in super-congested Boudha, aside from the Hyatt Hotel's. These features make Utpala fairly ideal for work meetings or casual social engagements, if not necessarily for haute cuisine.
As for the Owner's thank-you below, please spread the message of Ahimsa as it applies to our gut Biomes. (I don't think you know what "the runs" are!) To put it bluntly, most people I know that have gone to Utpala for years have reported diarrhea at some point after eating in your restaurant. Your employee hygiene and/or restaurant sanitation are SUBSTANDARD for Kathmandu in 2026. All the peace and love vibes in the world won't cure diarrhea, but PROFESSIONAL HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT will prevent it!

This can help get repeated customers if taken seriously....🙏

I think UTPALA should open one more branch somewhere in the Mid of the Town - Kathmandu / Lalitpur/ Bhaktapur

It would be a great option for working people to Go for a Dinner Mostly on Fridays, but Boudhha Location is way too far from working areas , so i cant visit there often.
